Ghost of Yotei PS5: the quick answers
Ghost of Yotei is a PlayStation 5 exclusive. It released on October 2, 2025, it is enhanced for PS5 Pro, and there is no PS4 or PC version. On a standard PS5 you can choose between 30 fps modes with higher resolution or ray tracing and a 60 fps Performance mode. PS5 Pro adds a Ray Tracing Pro mode that combines ray tracing with 60 fps.
Since patch 1.1 in November 2025, the game also supports 120Hz variable refresh rate (VRR), an uncapped frame rate option and new 40 fps Balanced modes. All figures below come from Digital Foundry's testing, as reported by PlayStation LifeStyle and Push Square.
- Best for smooth play on a standard PS5: Performance mode, 60 fps.
- Best image on a standard PS5: Quality mode, 30 fps at just under 4K.
- Best on PS5 Pro: Ray Tracing Pro, 60 fps with ray-traced lighting.
- Have a 120Hz TV? Try Balanced (40 fps) or turn on VRR with an uncapped frame rate.
Ghost of Yotei PS5 graphics modes
At launch the game shipped with three modes on a standard PS5. Digital Foundry found that each works as intended and that there is no single standout choice: it comes down to whether you prefer frame rate, sharpness or lighting.
| Mode | Target frame rate | Resolution (approx.) | Ray tracing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quality | 30 fps | Slightly below 4K | No |
| Performance | 60 fps | Closer to 1080p | No |
| Ray Tracing | 30 fps | Around 1440p | Yes |
| Balanced (patch 1.1) | 40 fps | Needs a 120Hz display | No |
| Ray Tracing Balanced (patch 1.1) | 40 fps | Needs a 120Hz display | Yes |

PS5 Pro enhancements
On PS5 Pro every mode runs at a higher resolution, and there is an extra mode. Sucker Punch explained in its tech deep dive on the PlayStation Blog that the game uses PSSR, PlayStation's AI upscaling, on PS5 Pro because it reconstructs fine detail on architecture and foliage better and is more stable in motion. The Pro's ray tracing hardware also makes it possible to run ray-traced global illumination at a 60 fps target.
| Mode | Target frame rate | Resolution (approx.) | Ray tracing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quality | 30 fps | 4K | No |
| Performance | 60 fps | 1440p | No |
| Ray Tracing | 30 fps | Around 1728p | Yes |
| Ray Tracing Pro | 60 fps | Around 1080p (upscaled with PSSR) | Yes |
The 40 fps Balanced modes from patch 1.1 are also available on PS5 Pro.
120Hz, VRR and uncapped frame rates
Patch 1.1, released on November 24, 2025, added variable refresh rate support with two settings, Smoothed and Uncapped, plus the new Balanced modes that target 40 fps on 120Hz displays. In the Balanced modes, cutscenes run at 30 fps.
With VRR and the uncapped setting, the game can run well above its normal caps. Digital Foundry measured the PS5 Pro's Ray Tracing Pro mode jumping from 60 fps to between 70 and 90 fps, and called the improvement "incredible". Balanced Ray Tracing on PS5 Pro moved between 40 and 60 fps, and the non-ray-traced modes gained roughly a third more frames. On a standard PS5, Balanced mode can reach 60 fps when uncapped on a 120Hz VRR display.
The game does not have a dedicated 120 fps mode. Uncapped frame rates also vary more from moment to moment, which a VRR display smooths out; without VRR, stick to the capped modes to avoid judder.
To use VRR, your TV or monitor needs HDMI 2.1 VRR support, and VRR must be turned on in the PS5 system settings under Screen and Video, Video Output. Only then do the VRR options in the game's graphics menu take effect.
Which Ghost of Yotei PS5 mode should you use?
Choose based on your console and TV rather than on one "best" setting.
| Your setup | Recommended mode | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Standard PS5, 60Hz TV | Performance | Smooth 60 fps; the 40 fps modes need 120Hz |
| Standard PS5, 120Hz TV with VRR | Balanced or Ray Tracing Balanced, VRR on | Better image than Performance while staying above 30 fps |
| PS5 Pro, any TV | Ray Tracing Pro | Ray-traced lighting at 60 fps |
| PS5 Pro, 120Hz TV with VRR | Ray Tracing Pro, VRR Uncapped | 70-90 fps measured by Digital Foundry |
| You mainly take screenshots | Quality | The sharpest image, at 30 fps |
File size and storage
Ghost of Yotei version 1.002 takes up 85.119 GB on PS5, about 26 GB more than Ghost of Tsushima's 59.185 GB. Later patches and the Echoes of Sekigahara expansion will add to that. Sony has not published the expansion's download size yet, so leave some headroom on your SSD before October 1, 2026.
Kurosawa, Miike and Watanabe modes
Like Ghost of Tsushima's Kurosawa mode, Ghost of Yotei has three optional presentation modes inspired by Japanese directors. They change how the game looks or sounds, not how it plays, and can be combined with any graphics mode.
| Mode | Inspired by | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Kurosawa Mode | Akira Kurosawa | Black-and-white film look with film grain, filtered audio and stronger wind |
| Miike Mode | Takashi Miike | Moves the camera closer in fights and adds more blood and mud |
| Watanabe Mode | Shinichiro Watanabe | Replaces the soundtrack with lo-fi tracks made for the game |
The free October 1, 2026 update adds new Watanabe Mode tracks.
What patch 1.1 changed on PS5
Beyond the graphics options, patch 1.1 was the game's biggest update before the expansion. It added New Game+, which keeps your gear, upgrades, cosmetics and collectibles, along with a new vendor and two upgradeable armor sets bought with Ghost Flowers. All 22 Yotei Six camps and 26 duels became replayable with results screens. It also added photo mode options and accessibility settings such as a fall damage toggle, auto-loot and a skip for the sumi-e minigame.
Online co-op arrived later: Ghost of Yotei: Legends launched as a free update on March 10, 2026. See the Ghost of Yotei DLC guide for the October 2026 content, and the PC status page if you are wondering about other platforms.
